black compact car sideways on the highway | On-the-Job Car AccidentsWhile the majority of workers’ compensation claims declined 17.6% from 2011 to 2016, the frequency for on-the-job car accidents actually rose by 5%. A new report that used NCCI statistical data found that over 40% of all worker compensation fatalities involved a motor vehicle accident. Other findings of the report included:

  • Motor vehicle claims cost up to 100% more than other claims
  • Smartphone ownership doubled to 81% by 2016 and may be the main factor in car accident rise
  • Majority of the accidents were the result of driving and not being hit by another car

Smartphone use over the last decade has skyrocketed and drivers of all ages routinely engage in distracted driving behaviors thanks to their phones. From navigating the GPS feature to surfing Spotify, these smartphones have ushered in a new age of distracted driving and car accident dangers.

According to the CDC, approximately nine people every day lose their lives in accidents caused by distracted driving. At any given time of the day, approximately 660,000 Americans are using cell phones while driving. Smartphones are responsible for 10% of all fatal crashes and 18% of all injury crashes and that number is on the rise, despite safety warnings and hands-free laws. Statistics from the Governors Highway Safety Association found that only 15 states prohibit all drivers from using hand-held cell phones while driving and 47 states have some type of texting and driving law.
