Five Things Attorneys Want You to Know

Court House ExteriorThe vast majority of attorneys work incredibly hard for their clients. Attorneys take their job seriously and will do their best to ensure that your personal injury suit pays as much as possible for your injuries and lost wages. Yet, an attorney’s success is often hindered by mistakes their clients make – both knowingly and innocently. Even worse, some clients treat their attorneys improperly – and this can affect the case significantly. Here are five things attorneys want you to know:

What Your Attorney Wants You to Know:

  1. Always tell the truth. It is highly likely your attorney—or the opposing attorney—will discover your lie at the most inopportune time, so keep things simple and tell your attorney the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Withholding facts or blatantly lying can vastly reduce your attorney’s ability to properly represent you. And when the truth comes out, your attorney may doubt other things you have said as well.
  2. Your Attorney is Not a Mind Reader. Your attorney has likely had hundreds of clients throughout his or her professional career and no two are ever the same. If you have questions or concerns, please voice them. Your attorney cannot help you unless you clearly state what you need.
  3. Don’t come to court or a deposition in shorts and flip-flops. No matter how casually you normally dress, whether at work or home, it is not conducive to the outcome of your case to appear in court looking like you just came home from a nightclub or a day at the beach. While you should not be judged on your clothing, in fact, most people do make judgments based on how a person is dressed. Dress like you are going to church or a professional job interview in order to enhance your credibility with your attorney, the judge, and others associated with your case.

  1. Understand that the legal system moves slowly, even in the best of circumstances. Attorneys have to wait in line also and are at the mercy of the court, as far as scheduling and time frames. Develop some patience and expect that your case will take as long as it takes. Your personal injury attorney has no interest in stretching it out.
  2. Just because you are “right” does not necessarily mean you will have a positive outcome. Unfortunately, much of the legal process can be about which witness is more believable or likeable, or which attorney happens to have the nicest suit or is the most articulate. In other words, the overall strength of your case may not be tied to whether you are right.

Personal injury attorneys understand how important your case is to you and your family. As such, they work diligently to see that your case is resolved or settled as quickly as possible. If you have any questions about your case or about how you should act during the legal process, make sure you ask your attorney directly. Good communication is key to winning your case and obtaining maximum compensation.
